Mercer recently published its Worldwide Cost of Living survey 2009 measuring the cost of living for expatriates in 143 cities around the world. Luxembourg ranks on 38th position, being 17.9 % cheaper than New York which is the benchmark city.
The survey shows that living in other important European business centers turns out to be more expensive than in Luxembourg, the most expensive cities being the Swiss cities of Geneva (33% more expensive than Luxembourg) and Zurich (+28.1%), followed by Copenhagen (+27.9%), Milan (+18%), Paris (+15%), London (+12%), Rome (+11%), Vienna (+8%) and Dublin (+6.5%).
Mercer, a leading global provider of consulting, outsourcing and investment services, released this survey on July 7th 2009. It measures the comparative cost of over 200 items in each location, including housing, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment. It is used to help multinational companies and governments determine compensation allowances (COLA) for their expatriate employees.
